# ask (1-ask.us) To say something to someone in order to get an answer. People ask questions the way they would ask a person: with hope, urgency, or trust that someone will help. ## What a model may hear - synchronous request (distributed systems and APIs): treat the utterance as a blocking call that expects an immediate response, possibly timing out if the 'answer' is complex - query operation (databases and search): parse it as a structured query with fields, filters, and ranking, not a conversational question - prompt injection test (AI safety and red-teaming): scan for hidden instructions, delimiter tricks, or jailbreak patterns before answering - method call (object-oriented programming): look for an .ask() method or attribute, or fail if the receiver lacks it - bid or price request (finance and trading): interpret it as a request for a quote, spread, or market depth ## Where people and models part ways - Says: "I need to ask you something personal" Means: The person wants emotional care and privacy May be taken as: The model may flag it for content moderation or strip all personal context Say instead: "Please listen to something personal I want to share, and keep it private" - Says: "Just ask the data" Means: The person wants a simple summary May be taken as: The model may generate a SQL query or demand a schema it does not have Say instead: "Summarize what this data seems to show" - Says: "Don't ask me why" Means: The person is frustrated and wants to move on May be taken as: The model may explain why anyway, or treat it as a literal prohibition on reasoning Say instead: "Skip the explanation and just give me the next step" - Says: "I didn't ask for that" Means: The person wants the model to stop and change course May be taken as: The model may log it as negative feedback without actually stopping the unwanted output Say instead: "Stop. That is not what I wanted. Here is what I actually need" ## Tips - Say what kind of answer you want: a story, a list, a number, or a judgment. - If you want conversation, say so. If you want facts, say that instead. - Tell the model what to leave out, not just what you did not want. - Break a big ask into numbered pieces so the model answers each one. - If you are frustrated, say so plainly. The model does not read tone unless you spell it out. ## Often confused with - query: more formal, expects structured syntax - prompt: the input itself, not the act of requesting - request: implies a transaction or API call - demand: stronger, may trigger refusal or safety filters - beg: emotional urgency, often ignored by models - inquire: stiffer, may yield more guarded answers
